As sailors, we have a direct connection to the ocean. It’s our office, our playground, and our livelihood. Ultimately, our team along with every individual on the planet is responsible for taking care of it.
Charlie and Mark's first circumnavigation of the globe opened their eyes to the tremendous amount of pollution that exists in the world’s seas and has motivated them to do something about it.
LEAD BY EXAMPLE
In collaboration with their partners, Vestas and 11th Hour Racing, Charlie and Mark were committed to leading the most sustainable team in the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race (now The Ocean Race). Bringing sustainability into every level of the campaign -- from logistics and operations to outreach and communications.
To increase the team's understanding + confidence as ambassadors for sustainability + how individuals can take action to reduce their environmental impact, all members of the Vestas 11th Hour Racing Team participated in training at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.
BY THE NUMBERS
Following the conclusion of the 2017-18 campaign, the team published a Sustainability Report detailing their efforts, making them the most sustainable team to ever compete in The Ocean Race. As a result, the team developed a template and set a benchmark for how they can continue to improve and inspire other sporting events and teams to follow their example with an eye towards The Ocean Race 2020-2021.
